STORYLINE:

Fighters of the Northern Alliance were heading through Afghanistan's Panshir Valley Tuesday towards the frontline north of Kabul.

The troops were in high spirits, shouting "Allah Akbar!" as they departed to take on the Taliban.

"We are going to fight until the last bullet for the independence of Afghanistan", said Commander Khackin Abdullah.

And, showing his appreciation of the U-S air strikes on Taliban positions, Commander Abdullah went on: "We are going to fight against the invasion of foreign terrorists, the Taliban and Arabs who came to our land."

The Northern Alliance opposition is repositioning its forces for a fresh offensive, as soon as the air strikes end.

The Northern Alliance is an association of ethnic groups and warlords who held power for a while after Islamist forces drove out the former Soviet Union from Afghanistan in 1989.

It is a key element of the current U-S assault because of its members' intimate knowledge of Afghan terrain, which could be especially useful in the event of U-S ground operations.
