Tailored Textiles
“Load-specific preform design based on tailored textiles using production-oriented design processes.”
With the technology of open reed weaving, multiaxial fabrics can be produced in a single work step for applications in the field of fibre reinforced composites or classic textiles. By integrating up to four yarn systems into one fabric, tailor-made semi-finished products for different applications can be produced. This includes structural reinforcements with load belts, local reinforcement of force transmitting elements or the production of fabrics with more than two load carrying directions.
At ITA, potential fields of application for the technology are being researched within the framework of various research projects. This includes the determination and quantification of manufacturing constraints as well as the investigation of the integrability of the technology into conventional textile processes, e.g. preforming. Furthermore, the determination of structural-mechanical properties of fibre reinforced plastics based on ORW semi-finished products is a main focus of the research activities.
A state-of-the-art Dornier PTS 4/SOC10 weaving machine is available at ITA for this purpose. With this machine, materials such as carbon, glass, aramid, polyester and other fibres can be processed on a width of up to 1920 mm.
