Russian Submachine Guns Through War: From PPD-34 to PPK-20

Описание: From the frozen forests of the Winter War to the special forces operations of the 21st century, this video follows the evolution of Russia's most iconic submachine guns — from the PPD-34 to the modern PPK-20.

It began in 1935 with the PPD-34.

One of the Soviet Union's first mass-produced submachine guns, it introduced a new concept of portable automatic firepower for Red Army infantry. Though expensive and difficult to manufacture, it laid the foundation for everything that followed.

Then came war.

During the Winter War of 1939, the improved PPD-34/38 faced Finnish forces in brutal Arctic combat. Soviet commanders quickly realized that close-range automatic weapons could dominate forests, trenches, and urban fighting.

The lesson was clear.

In 1940, the PPD-40 arrived with a higher rate of fire and larger drum magazine, becoming one of the most recognizable Soviet weapons before the German invasion.

But history would soon create a legend.

In 1941, the PPSh-41 entered service during the desperate defense of Moscow. Cheap, rugged, and capable of delivering devastating automatic fire, it became the symbol of Soviet infantry during World War II.

Soon after, the siege of Leningrad produced another breakthrough.

The PPS-42 and later PPS-43 simplified production while maintaining combat effectiveness. Lightweight, reliable, and easy to manufacture under wartime conditions, they became some of the finest submachine guns of the Second World War.

Then the Cold War changed everything.

Assault rifles gradually replaced submachine guns as standard infantry weapons, but the need for compact automatic firepower never disappeared.

In 1994, the PP-19 Bizon appeared during the First Chechen War era. Featuring its distinctive helical magazine, it represented a new generation of Russian close-quarters weapons.

Counter-terror operations demanded something even more compact.

The PP-2000 emerged in 2004, designed for police units, security forces, and urban combat scenarios where mobility and rapid reaction were critical.

Then came the Vityaz.

Introduced in 2010, the PP-19-01 Vityaz combined the familiar handling of the AK platform with the controllability of a modern 9mm submachine gun, quickly becoming a favorite among Russian special units.

Finally, the story reaches the PPK-20.

Developed for modern Russian forces and adopted by elements of the Russian Aerospace Forces, it represents the latest chapter in nearly a century of Russian submachine gun development.

From the PPD-34 to the PPSh-41.
From the siege of Leningrad to modern special operations.
From Soviet assault troops to contemporary Russian forces.

This is the evolution of Russian submachine guns through war.
