There seems to be a problem with India’s Food safety and standards. This comes in the wake of Nestle admitting that the lead in Maggi noodles is below the Indian standard. India’s Food Safety and Standards Act prescribes a maximum of 2.5 mg/kg (2.5 ppm) as the safe level for lead in noodles. But this standard is flawed and dangerous.
Because WHO has said that there is no safe level to lead exposure.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits lead content in food meant for infants and children at 0.005 ppm. Indian standards are 500 times higher than those in the US.
Lead can accumulate in different organs of the body and is particularly harmful for young children. In the body, it is distributed to the brain, liver, kidney and bones. At high levels of exposure, lead attacks the brain and central nervous system to cause coma, convulsions and even death.
So while Nestle may say that Maggi is safe to consume. Our food safety laws need an overhaul
