Freckles are just a part of life. Some people have them and some don't, but why? If you're like me and have always wondered what makes freckles happen, then this video is for you. We'll explore the science behind freckles and how they form on the skin. We'll also talk about what causes some people to develop them more than others.
Freckles are a result of a genetic mutation. They’re not a result of sunburn, nor do they occur after prolonged exposure to the sun. Freckles appear when melanocytes (cells in your skin that produce melanin) mistakenly produce too much melanin, causing the pigmentation in the affected area. The freckle often fades as you age until it disappears entirely.
The more you have, the higher your risk for developing melanoma and other types of skin cancer later in life. This is why it's important to wear sunscreen every day and avoid excessive tanning beds and ultraviolet light exposure altogether!
freckles are genetic. They are caused by a variation in the MC1R gene, which regulates melanin production. The same gene that gives you freckles can also cause red hair and pale skin. If both parents carry this gene variation, their children have a 1/4 chance of inheriting it and developing freckles as well.
If you were born with freckles, you're in good company: the Queen of England and George Washington had them too!
You may be wondering, "If freckles are just a tan, why do I get sunburned?" Well, it's true that freckles are a result of an overactive melanocyte (the cells responsible for producing melanin). However, not everyone's melanocytes overreact in the same way. In fact, one person can have a very normal amount of tanning and still end up with plenty of freckles on their face or body.
When we talk about people who get sunburned easily—notably those with red hair or fair skin—we're not talking about someone who has a particularly high number of freckles; rather it's their blood vessels that react poorly to UV rays. When those blood vessels expand in response to UV exposure they cause redness and irritation on your skin surface which makes you feel like you've been burned when really what happened was that your body tried to protect itself against further damage by turning pinker than usual.
So, if you have freckles, don't worry! They aren't a sign that you've been spending too much time in the sun. It's just one of those things: some people are born with them and others aren't. If anyone asks why they have their freckles, be sure to send them to this video!
