A new potential mechanism of antipsychotic action is agonism of the trace amine associated receptor type 1 (TAAR1). Trace amines and their receptors are somewhat novel entities that we are discovering may hold importance in the field of mental health. This video introduces the trace amines and explains the neurobiology of trace amines and how they can alter neurotransmission. In order to explain potential therapeutic actions in schizophrenia, we show potentially how trace amines may reduce dopamine.
TAAR1 is widely expressed throughout the brain, including in monoamine brainstem centers (dorsal raphe nucleus, ventral tegmental area) and in monoamine projection areas.
