Discover St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of Melbourne, an Anglican landmark directly opposite Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. Built in a neo-Gothic (transitional) style to designs by English architect William Butterfield, the main building opened in 1891; its trio of sandstone spires (to the revised design of John Barr) rose later in 1926–1932, completing the skyline silhouette many know today.
The site hosted Melbourne’s first official church service in 1836, anchoring the city’s early civic life. Butterfield’s design mixes Early English and Decorated Gothic elements; inside you’ll find patterned stone, Venetian glass mosaics and encaustic tiles typical of High Victorian Gothic. The central Moorhouse Spire took the cathedral to its full height (95 m) when the spires were finished, with thanksgiving services marking completion in 1932–33.
