This animation shows the formation of laminar-turbulent patterns in plane Couette flow near the onset of transition. Simulations are performed at a Reynolds number Re=330, in large domains of size 800x2x356, using a total of 2048x33x1024 discretisation points in the streamwise, wall-normal and spanwise directions.
The simulation is initiated with random noise, which quickly dissipates forming streamwise streaks, which in turn lead to local turbulence seeds. These grow in an oblique manner until the full domain is dominated by a quasi-steady stripe pattern.
