Xargon Ending | Endgame Vault

Описание: Growing up with an old DOS PC, my gaming options were limited. Xargon was one of those few games I had access to, thanks to shareware disks that I purchased at, of all places, a science museum’s gift shop. (Yup, I was a nerd back then, too. There were probably tons of better, cooler gift options, but I opted for an episode of a PC game.) These disks gave me the first two episodes of Xargon. The mysterious third episode eluded me for the longest time, at least, until the internet was more mainstream in my life, and I was able to browse abandonware sites to find it.

That said, Xargon is a great game. Think of it as the 16 bit brother to the 8 bit Jill of the Jungle. Brighter and more colorful graphics, sound effects that make slightly more sense, and a great soundtrack round out the package. But there’s one big problem: the “boss” battles. And I use that term loosely.

See, in the final stage of each episode, once you get to the end of the level, you teleport to one last area with a bunch of stone bricks that can be destroyed by the crappy rock weapons that you’re forced to pick up. Enemy robots will constantly spawn in, and you need to find the reactor, a stationary machine that keeps spawning in the aforementioned robots. This is the boss. It’s lackluster. Sure, Jill didn’t have a boss fight, but I feel that worked better than this lackluster attempt. Save your emeralds, buy an invulnerability shield or two, and get through the stage scratch free.

At least you do get to go up against Xargon at the end, after destroying the third generator. Sadly, he’s not much more difficult than the generators. But at least the fight is there.

Even with this said, I can’t let that small bit bring down my enjoyment of the game. Xargon is highly recommended.

Please note though: for some reason, the version of DOSBox I was using to play the game had some seriously slowdown at points. I don’t recall it being quite THIS bad when I played the game on older PCs, but keep this in mind if you do want to give it a shot. Which you should.
