Too expensive?
$70 billion per year - enough to fund a public Medicare option:
7-8% of the annual U.S. military budget ($900B)
7% of what we pay every year just in interest on the national debt ($970B)
or we could save money - an unfathomable amount of money - simply changing to a better system.
We could adopt a Swiss-style universal private system with subsidies and cost caps, or structure a German-style central risk pool with insurer competition, allowing for universal coverage with efficiency and value.
No spending needed. We would save an incredible amount of money.
We have the money to provide health care. Other high-income nations prove that universal coverage can coexist with market competition, fiscal discipline and innovation. We are supposed to be leading in those areas. And yet, we have fallen far behind.
Instead, politicians maintain a system that is inefficient and hyper-expensive by design. By giving people no other option, more profit can be generated through inefficiency and unregulated costs, with these wealthy corporations directly donating to… the very politicians that then benefit from not changing it.
Real structural healthcare reform. Not trivial policy changes.
Please- please- vote for health care reform as your top policy priority.
We can afford to do this.
We are choosing not to.
