Most adults in America understand that Medicare becomes their health insurance at a certain age. The Medicare program does not ask how much money or property you have. It just pays the bills.

What most American adults do not understand is that Medicare only covers acute care. Through no fault of your own, you might be the one in every three adults who develops dementia. You will likely need long-term skilled nursing care. This will NOT be covered by Medicare.

So unless you can privately pay $14,000 a month for care, you will probably need Medicaid. This requires extensive planning to preserve your savings, because Medicaid looks closely at how much you own.
