On January 6th, the Pacific Northwest woke up to a thick blanket of clouds, with 100% cloud cover dominating the sky. Surface winds averaged around 10.1 mph, while winds at 100 meters were stronger, averaging 18.0 mph. This difference in wind speed created a layer of turbulence as the descending surface winds encountered the faster-moving air above, resulting in some fascinating eddies and cloud formations. Low clouds made up 56.7% of the total cloud cover, while mid and high clouds were fully present, contributing to a dreary but mesmerizing atmosphere. As the temperature hovered around 38.5°F, light precipitation of 0.06 inches fell, adding a soft sheen to the landscape beneath the heavy overcast sky. As the day progressed to midday, conditions remained consistently overcast with cloud cover still at a complete 100%. The surface winds picked up slightly to an average of 13.1 mph, while the winds at 100 meters increased to approximately 22.7 mph. This increase in wind speed elevated the level of turbulence, causing the low clouds to swirl and shift restlessly. With all three layers of clouds—low, mid, and high—still fully present, the interaction of these winds created a dynamic sky where the lower clouds drifted sluggishly while the mid and high clouds moved more quickly toward the east. This contrast enhanced the layered effect of the clouds, creating a visual spectacle as precipitation rose to a total of 0.17 inches. Filmed in stunning 4K Ultra HD at 60fps, the beauty of the weather can be experienced in all its glory. By evening, the atmospheric conditions shifted slightly, with surface winds decreasing to a calmer 7.0 mph while the winds at 100 meters settled at around 15.1 mph. The cloud cover remained nearly complete, with low clouds at 99.3% and mid clouds still fully present. However, the high clouds began to thin, dropping to 92.3%, allowing some glimpses of the fading light to peek through. This evening transition led to a softer appearance in the overall cloud structure, with the previously turbulent skies now settling into a graceful dance as the wind layers continued to interact. Total precipitation for the day reached 1.03 inches, underscoring the consistent moisture that had defined the day, leaving behind a tranquil atmosphere as daylight faded into evening. Experience the captivating weather of the Pacific Northwest as clouds and winds tell their story in this mesmerizing visual journey.
