Thermal Stabilization
Soaking allows the transformer or other equipment to reach thermal equilibrium under no-load conditions. This helps identify any abnormal heating or cooling behavior before full operation.
Early Fault Detection
During soaking, engineers often perform diagnostic tests like Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) on transformer oil. This can reveal internal issues such as insulation breakdown or incipient faults before the equipment is loaded.
Stress Testing
Energizing from the high-voltage side simulates real operating conditions. It helps verify insulation integrity and detect issues like ferroresonance, which can occur due to line capacitance and core non-linearity when transformers are energized but unloaded.
Voltage Control
In long transmission lines, soaking helps manage voltage levels. Without load or shunt reactors, voltage can rise above nominal levels, so soaking helps assess and control this behavior safely.
Commissioning Sequence Compliance
Soaking is often part of a systematic energization sequence to ensure safe and reliable integration of new equipment into the grid.
