As part of the 2025/2026 hazard mitigation plan, OEM has developed 18 different information sheets that cover a variety of different hazards that we're exploring as part of our hazard mitigation plan update. These sheets cover the hazard and where it can occur in the City. These could be hazards like flooding, extreme temperatures, or something more unusual like drought.
Additionally, there's potential impacts that we as a City may face. Power outages, property damage, chemical spills, and other disruptions are all covered in these handy sheets. We also included a section on climate change considerations that will have a significant impact on many of the hazards that we face here in the city of Philadelphia. For example, with flooding, if sea levels rise three feet, which is the high end of current predictions, 207 buildings could be impacted with the potential of $727,000,000 in building damages. While that sounds alarming, this scenario is still far in the future, and we’re working to reduce risks like flooding and sea level rise through our hazard mitigation plan. This comprehensive effort is being worked on by your Office of Emergency Management and with over 80 different partners, such as the Philadelphia Water Department, the Office of Sustainability, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and of course, FEMA.
Come out and see us at our public events and be on the lookout for a public comment period starting in January! You can find our survey starting on January 12th, 2026, on our webpage: www.phila.gov/ready.
