When reading, the reader’s linguistic ability and familiarity with the culture(s) in which the story is set are potential limiting factors to understanding, whether reading the original text or a translation. With the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett, the reader encounters frequent wordplay and constant use of allusions and other cultural references. There is therefore the possibility of misinterpretation due to a lack of familiarity with British English or British culture – or that of the wider English-speaking world. The translator, too, is first and foremost a reader, and since Pratchett’s books are considered satirical as well as entertaining, any loss of cultural references in translation may affect both those purposes.
