At around 8 p.m. last night, a Mirage fighter jet lost power during a night training exercise. The pilot, Captain Hsieh Pei-hsun of the Hsinchu Air Force Base, ejected into the darkness somewhere southwest of Nanliao Fishing Port. The Ministry of National Defense immediately dispatched naval and air assets to conduct a full-scale search and rescue operation, during which Hsieh was rescued. This afternoon, the Air Force held a press conference to explain the situation.

During the process of the descent, there was indeed an unusual jam with the reel. Two Coast Guard boats were nearby, and we immediately transferred the individuals to a smaller vessel. We are not ruling out any factors, including environmental, mechanical, or human elements. We are currently gathering and analyzing all relevant evidence.

Flight crew members undergo rigorous medical examinations and rehabilitation according to strict standard operating procedures. They are only allowed to resume flying once they are fully fit and meet all required standards.
Lai Ching-te
President
To defend the country, the armed forces not only stand their posts but also undergo training around the clock. In such conditions, their efforts are extremely demanding. I urge all citizens to give full support to the military.
Captain Hsieh Pei-hsun of the Air Force was sent to Taichung Metro Harbor Hospital in the early hours of this morning. Preliminary examinations revealed that Captain Hsieh has sustained a cervical spine bruise. President Lai Ching-te visited the hospital this morning to see the captain, praising his performance and emphasizing that the nation’s stance is that the lives of the pilots are paramount above all else. All Mirage fighter jets have been temporarily grounded since the mishap.
