Japan has approved a plan to send an armed convoy to protect Japanese ships in the Middle East. The Self-Defense Forces (SDF) unit includes a helicopter-equipped destroyer with about 260 people on board, as well as two patrol planes. The unit's task is to ensure safe passage for Japanese vessels in the Middle East. A Japanese tanker was among several international vessels attacked in the region between May and June 2019. The US blamed Iran for the attack, which took place in the Strait of Hormuz. While Japan is an US ally, it also maintains friendly ties with Iran.
