Effective team leadership depends on consistent communication. However, due to the way management styles evolved over the decades, Gen X characteristics and leadership styles are now getting in the way of good team communication.

You see, for years the baby boomers managed their teams using weekly meetings. These teams consisted of Gen X employees. Having experienced these meetings for so long, when Gen X employees rose into managerial positions, they did away with them.

As a result, the baby boomers and the millennials are now struggling to feel part of a team. The baby boomers need consensus building. They want to be able to connect on a regular basis. Millennials want to feel like they‘re cared for.

Do you see the problem here? Gen X characteristics in leadership leave no room for obligatory meetings and workplace intimacy. This leaves both the baby boomers and the millennials yearning for more cohesion and community. Effective team leadership must address these deficiencies.

Whenever I’m called into an organization, I receive the same answers to my questions. After hemming and hawing for a bit, the baby boomers ultimately start gushing about the lack of coordination among the team.

When I ask the millennials how they’re doing, their answer is generally that they don’t feel valued.

In this situation the team falls apart.

The solution for leaders is to do the following:

Be visible.
Show interest.
Reaffirm people.
Give praise.
Build consensus.

By doing these things regularly, you can develop effective team leadership. Just because you’re a Gen X manager and have Gen X characteristics or tendencies, does not mean that you’re stuck in that role. By taking measures to improve communication, you’ll make your team feel a whole lot better.
