Nigeria’s busiest holiday route nearly came to a standstill but the traffic crisis now has a response. When Christmas travel chaos turns a highway into a parking lot, the spotlight falls on traffic management and the FRSC has moved in to break the deadlock. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed additional officers and tow trucks along the Abuja–Lokoja Road after days of severe gridlock left motorists stranded for hours, some since Saturday, barely a few days before Christmas. The congestion, the Corps says, was fuelled by a surge in holiday traffic, multiple ongoing road constructions, and undisciplined drivers flouting rules including driving against traffic and lane indiscipline that worsened the delays. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed ordered the reinforcements to clear obstructions quickly, remove broken-down vehicles, and enforce discipline on the road. Motorists have been urged to cooperate with officers and obey traffic laws to ease movement. Some reports also noted the role of fallen trucks and road blockages around the Koton-Karfe axis, which turned parts of the highway into miles-long backups. With holiday travel peaking and roads under pressure, the government’s intervention aims to keep millions moving safely.
But as long as drivers ignore rules and construction bottlenecks persist, the pain of gridlock might not end anytime soon.
