This is how we start the New Year in Korea. 🇰🇷 Forget everything you know about soup—these chewy Korean rice cakes (the same ones in Tteokbokki!) in a milky beef broth are a total game changer. It's the ultimate New Year comfort food for a fresh start.
Ingredients 🛒
• 2 cups sliced rice cakes, soaked (300g)
• 6–8 oz beef stew meat, cut bite‑size (170–225g) 🥩
• 1 Tbsp neutral oil (15ml)
• 1 tsp sesame oil (5ml)
• 4–5 cups water (960–1200ml)
• 1–2 Tbsp Korean soup soy sauce (15–30ml)
• 1–2 green onions, sliced (20–30g)
• Salt, to taste
• 1 egg, lightly beaten 🥚
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Soak rice cakes.
2️⃣ Sauté beef in oil + sesame oil.
3️⃣ Add water and simmer.
4️⃣ Add rice cakes + soy sauce.
5️⃣ Add green onion, season, then stir in egg.
Notes 📝
• Rice cakes: Rinse and soak to soften and remove excess starch.
• Beef: Cook on low–medium heat until the redness disappears before adding water.
• Broth: Skim foam if you prefer a cleaner soup.
• Seasoning: Adjust with salt at the end for best control.
• Egg: Turn off the heat before adding so it stays silky, not overcooked.
• Serving: Great with roasted seaweed, black pepper, or extra green onion on top.
