Check out this BEAUTIFUL lettuce variety!
We love it because it does well in warm climates, like here in San Diego. When other lettuce wilts in hot weather, the red sails variety stays crisper and fresher. It's pretty pest-resistant and so easy to harvest! Because it doesn't form a tight head, you can just take what you need when you need it with the cut-and-come-again method, or you can get the whole thing!
Although it does handle heat well, it's still a cool-season crop. You can sow directly into the ground (keep it moist!), or you can start it in a greenhouse like we do. That lets you keep a closer eye on things and keep pests at bay.
