I've known Katie and Joe for 20 years. I know them through boats. This boat in particular, CLARABELLE, the boat that I've done most of the tinyboatsessions in. Katie’s father, Dave, started the company, Gig Harbor Boat works that builds them. Joe worked there too.

It all began when I decided to row across the ocean with some friends. Dave introduced himself to our team at the Seattle Boat Show to help make some sliding seats for our ocean rowboat that we planned to row from New York to England in. They worked beautifully and eventually I would buy two of his boats, CLARABELLE and a sister boat, PELICAN. Over these years I got to know Katie and Joe.

They met playing music. Joe would eventually join the Army and Katie would start managing Gig Harbor Boat Works. Katie also sings opera and Joe found himself in intelligence. Eventually Joe would start writing best selling science fiction fantasy novels and the two of them live in the forest outside Gig Harbor with some big lovely dogs and in their free time play music and work a big garden full of peas, kiwis and other fine things..

I wanted to get them to do a tinyboatsession for sometime. They invited me down for homemade pizza with early summer vegetables grown in the garden. We headed down to the water, put a big battery in the boat to plug Joe’s keyboard in. We found an unexpected grotto with stone statues that they did not know about in spite of living there for years. They played jazz and the background inspired a forested bayou. Then Katie played tin whistle and sang elvish from Lord of the Rings and the grotto fit that too.

At the end of the session a kayaker with a dog in his lap stopped by. He said his name was Brian and he was tickled we found the grotto. It had been him and his daughter that had put the statues there and he was glad to see them being enjoyed.
