Your Fish and Chips Started a NATO Crisis
• Your Fish and Chips Started a NATO Crisis
In 1958, an Icelandic patrol boat fired a blank at a British fishing trawler. Iceland had no army. Britain had ruled the oceans for centuries. Over nearly eighteen years, three "Cod Wars" followed: cut nets, ramming frigates, a broken diplomatic relationship. The tiny country won every round.
So what really happened? It was never only about fish. It was about geography, NATO, and a base the West couldn't afford to lose.

NOTES
Historians usually count three Cod Wars (1958–61, 1972–73, 1975–76). Some sources also count the 1952–56 dispute as a prelude, which is why you will sometimes see "four".
No war was ever declared, and only one accidental death is generally reported.
The NATO meeting scene is a reconstruction: the people and the issues are real, the atmosphere is dramatized.
Catch quotas and dates vary slightly between sources; I used the most widely cited figures.
Illustrations were created with AI tools.
