My teacher was REALLY into Moliere, he would tell us Moliere was his favorite frequently. Each person in the class was assigned to do a 10-page essay about a classic playwright. I was randomly given Moliere. I had no idea who this dude was and I definitely didn't want to write 10 pages about this guy. So I asked my teacher if I could make a movie instead. This, believe it or not, was WAY easier for me than writing 10 pages.
During the filming, I literally just had a wikipedia page pulled up and I would ask Jeremy (The actor who played Moliere) random questions from the wikipedia page. Jeremy knew even LESS than I did about Moliere. So basically every single thing Jeremy said was just made up on the spot. We didn't fact check or anything. I made the rap song as the cherry on top because I honestly just wanted to see a 1600's french playwright rapping. At the very end, I just did a voice over narration with the correct information from wikipedia.
When I brought it to class, I was proud. The teacher put this movie on last, because he was really excited too. I can imagine in his mind he pictured some sweeping biography movie with authentic dialogue and monologues. Instead, he got my friend, wearing a fake mustache, talking about having sex with his very young wife. The class was cracking up while the movie was playing, and I kept glancing at my teacher... he was not laughing. He started to get really red and visibly angry around the time Moliere was dying with leafs in his mouth. (Apparently this is not how Moliere died.) After the movie was over, the class was over and everyone scurried out of the room. The teacher told me to stick around. He proceeded to tell me everything wrong with the movie, how upset he was and embarrassed I should be. (I was not.)
He failed me on the project and gave me an F in the class. He told me not to come back to the class.
The silver lining is that this video has over 100,000+ views now, and I still get messages to this day saying that they watch it in their theatre history class every year (How ironic!)
I really love it and even if it isn't totally accurate, it's fun... And I think Moliere would have appreciated it.
