This week in airplane news: the FAA is expected to release a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin regarding possible interference between radar altimeters and 5G cell signals, the FAA has approved over 600 GAMI fuel engines, an amphibious C-130, and a possible update to the ACS for certified flight instructors.

5G and Aircraft
The FAA plans to issue a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin and an Airworthiness Directive due to the rollout of 5G cellular services around 46 major cities on Dec. 5th.
The AD is expected to address and limit the use of radar altimeters or radio altimeters.
Flight delays or cancelations may occur as a result.
This comes after telecommunications companies paid (78 Billion) for access to the 3.7 to 3.98 GHz band.
This band is the same as used by radar altimeters which are required for decision height in Cat 2 and Cat 3 approaches. They’re also the source of ground proximity warnings.

GAMI Fuel
The FAA has approved 600 engines, or about 70% of the current engines in operation to use GAMI unleaded fuel.
The list includes Lycoming engines up to 360 cubic inch displacement (CID), Continental up to 470 CID, radial engines by Pratt & Whitney and Curtiss-Wright.
An additional list of approved engines is expected from the FAA in 2022.

Amphibious C-130
The military is creating a float system for the C-130 cargo aircraft
We should see a working prototype by 2022
The will allow the military to deploy nearly anywhere for any reason.
The military hasn’t operated amphibious aircraft in over 50 years.
Could this change bleed over into the civilian sector or into search and rescue?

CFI ACS updates
The FAA is moving forwards to change the airman certification standards for CFIs.
This change would require risk assessments and sound aeronautical decision-making for both the teaching of a pilot (by a CFI) and for the CFI.
The idea here is to force pilots to learn ADM even as a sport or private pilot.
