Here’s how to achieve the Dolly Zoom effect
The dolly zoom (also called the Vertigo effect) gives that trippy background movement while the subject stays locked. It’s a powerful way to add drama or tension, and it works best when you control both camera movement and focal length.
Step-by-step:
1. Framing:
Keep your subject framed consistently. Use the rule of thirds to position them, and make sure there’s a visible background to enhance the zoom distortion.
2. Lens choice:
I recommend using a 35 to 50mm lens. Anything longer can introduce jitter unless you have perfect stability. I used a 40mm with SteadyShot on.
3. Gimbal settings:
I set my gimbal to PF mode and slow down the joystick response to make smoother framing corrections while moving.
4. Post-production:
In DaVinci Resolve, match your first and last frame using the grid overlay (comment “grid” if you want it). Use tracking points to stabilize the subject, then crop as needed to finish the effect.
This trick works great when you want your viewer to feel something shift. It’s subtle but cinematic, and you can do it solo.
