Transmethylation
Transmethylation is the transfer of a methyl group (–CH₃) from one compound to another. The most common donor is S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), which donates methyl groups for the synthesis of compounds like epinephrine, creatine, choline, and nucleic acids.
Products of Glycine
Glycine serves as a precursor for several important biomolecules, including:
Heme (via porphyrins)
Purines (DNA/RNA bases)
Creatine (energy metabolism)
Glutathione (antioxidant)
Bile salts and collagen (structural protein component)
Products of Tryptophan
Tryptophan is a precursor of many biologically active compounds, such as:
Serotonin (neurotransmitter)
Melatonin (sleep hormone)
Niacin (Vitamin B₃) → NAD⁺/NADP⁺ (coenzymes)
Kynurenine pathway metabolites (important in immune and nervous system function)
