Xylella fastidiosa: Saving Mediterranean olives from a destructive disease

Описание: Xylella fastidiosa is one of the world’s most destructive bacterial plant diseases. It can attack over 500 types of plants, including staple crops such as citrus, grapes, stone fruits and olives. It has long caused problems in the Americas, but in 2013, it was discovered in parts of the Mediterranean region. The bacteria blocks a tree’s ability to carry water and nutrients to its extremities, causing an internal drought. As a result, branches weaken, leaves dry, fruits harden. There is no known cure yet. At minimum, infected trees and nearby host plants need to be uprooted and burned. If not properly contained, it could spread across the entire Mediterranean, devastating the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. FAO is supporting countries to prevent, detect and contain this deadly disease. Containing Xylella fastidiosa means greater stability for farmers and is good news for olive-lovers worldwide.
