Sixteen years ago, while staying here in Paharganj Delhi, I became critically ill in India. In time I was told I had 3 days to live. I didn’t tell my family how bad it was. Vicky did. He contacted my sister in Ireland, rang my hotel, and helped trigger the chain of events that led to my father finding me in Kathmandu and bringing me home with multiple organ failure.
In this video, I return to his chai stall in Paharganj market wearing a pollution mask, speaking Hindi, ordering elaichi chai for 10 rupees, joking about the price, and asking him his name to see if he recognises me after nearly 16 years.
What follows is a reunion over tea, real Delhi street life, and Vicky guiding us through the maze-like lanes of Paharganj bazaar to his small, hard-to-find shop.
