The Florida Museum of Natural History Undergraduate Internship Program was initiated in 2022 to increase the outreach and visibility of the Florida Museum across the University of Florida's campus. The program supports a diverse group of undergraduates by providing experiences in collections work, digitization, laboratory analysis, and fieldwork. Accepted students are paired with a faculty, staff, or graduate mentor to gain hands-on training on a semester-long project. In addition to working on their focused internship projects, the interns tour other museum collections and labs, engage with museum professionals, and gain academic and professional skills by preparing a brief written report and presenting a summary lightning talk on their project to communicate their research to the broader museum audience. This paid internship program is a successful model that can be adapted to fit different institutional needs. It is not only beneficial for students as they gain hands-on experience for future career paths but also furthers institutional goals such as digitization efforts, curation care, outreach, and research.
