Butanol Production via ABE fermentation using Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824. The substrate utilized is lignocellulosic biomass - Paddy straw. The video describes the butanol fermentation and extraction from the fermenter. Butanol has been attracting research attention
as a liquid biofuel recently, in addition to its current application as an industrial chemical and solvent. With the concerns of diminishing fossil reserves, environmental issues caused by greenhouse gas emission, and unstable supply and price spike of crude oil, renewed interest has returned to pursue biobutanol production through acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation as opposed to petrochemically derived butanol.
Currently researchers are undertaking various studies on
the development of butanol fermentation, such as Clostridium genetic manipulation and
feedstock investigation which can lower fermentation constraints. Lignocellulose feedstock is one of the cheaper biomass that is being currently studied, and has been reported as a sugar source for fermentation of ABE.
