A new study from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine found that there is likely to be an excess death for every 72 patients who spend eight to 12 hours in the emergency department.
Former NHS trust chairman and health policy analyst Roy Lilley said people are waiting a long time for treatment when visiting accident and emergency departments, and it is thought that hundreds of patients are dying unnecessarily each week as a result of these delays.
Lilley said; "delayed care is dangerous care".
He also explained there is also a serious problem of "bed blocking" in hospitals, with 1 in 3 patients on wards that can be discharged, unable to be, due to a serious lack of domiciliary care to allow them to go home.
