So you didn’t pass the board exam?
Many people are out there who have not passed the exam, whether they score high on exams or not. With my advice, you’ll be well on your way to test day success.
1. Read your report on the breakdown of the subjects.
2. Reflect on the act of taking the exam itself. Was it test anxiety? Timing? Your own thoughts? Take more practice questions!
3. Reflect on how you studied this last time and how to study more effectively according to what works for you. Boards and beyond, YouTube, lectures, a combination. This time, shock your system with a schedule change!
4. Understand the exam’s personality. There will be throwaways, so don’t be discouraged.
5. Take the Board Vitals questions under 60 seconds each. Simulate test day. Flesh out each concept (correct answer or not) on practice questions by reading explanations. Convert to flashcards (I.e. Anki). Divide the practice questions you have by the amount of days you have before the exam (week before the exam=finishing touches). I left the two official Prometric practice “tests” to take ONE PER week right before my actual exam.
6. Follow the curricular guide. Avoid anything under 3.0 in the guide if it’s not LEA (unless you know it’s high yield). Then return if have time later to the rest. You are now on a time crunch, so, in the grand scheme of things, if it’s not an easily searched objective, move on. Know just enough about everything, unless it’s high yield (through your general schooling, common sense, and practice questions).
Begin studying with the subject you felt needed the most revision.
7. Separate studying into organ systems. Daily LEA and split it into tracing out Nerves, vessels, muscle origins/insertions.
8. Schedule in REVIEWS on weekends.
9. If test-taking anxiety was the main culprit, discuss it with the learning specialists or therapists at your school. Exams like this can also surface conditions like ADHD and some learning disabilities (dyslexia, etc.), which are common in those of us pursuing medicine! Addressing these can help the trajectory of your life/career!
