We decided today to finally move more of our nets out to the combine since it was doing better then the slough, though with that came some wavy nights, and sea sick crewmates.

FAQ
1. Boat specs?
My boat is about 28 ft long and 9 ft wide at the top. It has 7 fish bins with insulated holds, can hold around 6,000 lbs in the bins and approximately 8-10k when completely full, and has a top speed currently around 38 mph.
2. What is the fishing you do?
I'm a set net commercial salmon fisherman in the Bristol Bay (Nushagak district). We fish with 50 fathom gillnets that are anchored off of the beach and the nets catch the fish by their gills/bodies. We get our boats under the nets and use hydraulic powered rollers to go up and down the net. We pick each fish out individually by hand and place them in ice temperature insulated bins and deliver them to local tenders (bigger boats with cranes and supplies) which deliver them to the local cannery plant where the fish are processed.
3. How long have you been a fisherman?
I've been coming up to Alaska each summer since I was 1, (so about 20 years now) but my family has been commercial salmon fishing since the 1960s.
4. Why pop the gills?
We pop the gills to preserve the meat of the salmon better and the company we sell to gives us a bonus when we do.
5. Does this hurt the fish???
Probably.
