Abstract: Silicon photomultipliers, SiPM, in conjunction with scintillators are used in nuclear imaging and detection. This paper demonstrates a trans-impedance amplifier, TIA, designed and fabricated in a 0.18um standard CMOS process compatible with custom CMOS and commercial SiPMs. The custom SiPM is also designed in the same CMOS process. The bulk driven amplifier used in the TIA topology enables the system to operate with lowered power supply. Measurement results show the proposed TIA has 7dB closed loop gain, total integrated input referred noise of 1.2uVrms, noise efficiency factor of 0.56, while consuming 0.41uW. The design has been tested with SiPMs and is a suitable choice to enable portable nuclear detection and imaging systems.
