Established in 1897, Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) has been a pioneer in India's power sector, lighting up Kolkata for over a century. From introducing electricity to transforming into a modern utility provider, CESC has played a crucial role in the city’s growth, ensuring reliable power supply and innovation in energy management.
Full History of CESC Limited
Early Beginnings (Late 19th Century)
The history of CESC Limited (Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation) dates back to the late 19th century when electricity was first introduced in India. Kolkata (then Calcutta), being a major commercial hub of British India, was among the first cities to receive electrical power.
In 1897, the first demonstration of electric lighting took place at the Town Hall in Kolkata.
Following this, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation was registered in London in 1897, marking the beginning of an organized electricity distribution system in the city.
Expansion and Growth (20th Century)
In 1902, CESC set up the first power plant at Emambagh Lane (Prinsep Street), Kolkata.
By 1912, the company established a power station in Metiabruz, expanding supply to different parts of the city.
Over the next few decades, CESC continued to grow, setting up more power plants and laying the foundation for Kolkata’s electrification.
During the mid-20th century, CESC was actively involved in electrifying public transport, including the iconic Kolkata tram system, which began operating on electric power in 1902.
Post-Independence and Industrial Expansion
After India's independence in 1947, CESC continued its operations under private management, playing a key role in industrial and urban development in West Bengal.
The 1950s-70s saw a rise in power demand, leading CESC to expand its infrastructure.
In 1978, CESC became part of the RPG Group, a major Indian business conglomerate.
The company set up major power stations at Titagarh, Southern, and Budge Budge to meet increasing demand.
Modernization & Digitalization (1990s - Present)
As India moved toward economic liberalization, CESC embraced modernization:
In the 1990s, it introduced computerized billing and digital customer services.
The Budge Budge Thermal Power Station (1997) became a landmark project for efficient electricity generation.
In the 2000s, CESC expanded into renewable energy, investing in solar and wind power.
The company also diversified into power distribution outside Kolkata, acquiring franchises in Noida, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
CESC Today
Currently, CESC provides electricity to 3.5 million+ consumers in Kolkata and surrounding areas. It operates thermal power plants, renewable energy projects, and distribution networks in various parts of India.
With a legacy of over 125 years, CESC remains a leading private power utility in India, committed to innovation, sustainability, and customer service.
