Join me in this special video as I become the first ever passenger to ride a TriMet MAX Type 6 in revenue service and also become the first ever passenger to make a full round trip in a Type 6! Outside of official TriMet footage, the clips in this video are the earliest ever taken of any Type 6s in revenue service. I literally pulled an all-nighter for this, so I hope you all enjoy haha!
The first portion of the video shows the things I filmed on the way to see the Type 6 train make its debut station stop, so if you want to skip right to the part of the video where the Type 6 train first shows up, you can go to 13:05. I encourage you to check out the beginning of the video, too, though, as there are some super awesome foggy morning MAX and Bus shots!
The video begins at Cleveland Avenue Park and Ride MAX Station in Gresham, where I film the beautifully peaceful, quiet, and especially foggy morning. The FX2 Buses can be seen making some of their earliest runs of the day and a freight train can be heard passing by all the way in Troutdale, my usual freight train filming spot. After getting some cool footage in the fog, the MAX train I will take to see the Type 6 train arrives, and I get a couple more shots before boarding. I get off at Civic Drive Station, where the Type 6 train is soon to make its first ever station stop in revenue service. Another train goes in and out of Cleveland, passing by Civic Drive in the process. After filming that train and getting some more fog shots, the Type 6s arrive and I step on board to a surprising amount of fanfare from TriMet personnel. Mission accomplished: I was Rider Number 1! (Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen?) A couple shots of the short trip back to Cleveland are shown, and from that point on, the video covers the first ever full round trip made by any Type 6s in revenue service. I catch a couple more trains in Hillsboro and hop back on the Type 6 train for the trip back to Gresham after getting a couple more still shots. Once back in Gresham, I say goodbye to the Type 6 train as it departs for Hillsboro again. What an awesome morning it was! Shoutout to my good friend Bobby Case for riding with me to Rose Quarter, to my new friend Jacob for hanging out with me that morning, and to all the friendly TriMet employees I met and talked with that morning! I am so happy I got to be a part of the big day!
While I didn't film every last moment of the trip, I got a lot of highlights and filmed more than 100 GB of footage that morning (making this one of my longest videos ever), so it's not like I was just letting the morning pass by without immortalizing the historic journey haha! Anyways, I would like to thank everyone so much for watching! This was a moment I had been waiting for for a long time, and I was especially excited since I missed out on seeing the Type 6 preview event as it happened when I was out of town. This more than made up for it! Thanks again for watching, and I hope you all enjoy getting to see these historic TriMet firsts!
PS - Look out for some Type 1s seen in the video, a very cool juxtaposition of the old and new trains! And I don't know if any of this footage is good enough for TriMet to actually use, but as a note, if anyone from TriMet watches this video I would be more than happy to share the raw footage. Leaving a comment or DMing my Instagram (pnw_trains) are good ways to get in touch as of 2/1/25.
Special thanks to my friends Matthew and Bobby who gave me a heads up about the Type 6 train being sent out that morning. I couldn't have done any of this without them!
Thanks again!
