I've been having problems keeping the head sealed to the block of my Komatsu PC35, so we pulled the engine (actually a Yanmar) and had the block and head planed. To get back our valve clearance and to bring the compression ratio back to stock, the pistons needed to be skimmed. 0.011" was all they needed. Easy enough that I could do it myself, now that I have a milling machine.
I found out in the middle of machining them that the piston walls weren't straight, so there was a little movement in the setup causing an erratic surface finish. The first was the worst, and it looks worse on camera than it actually was. A little sanding took care of it. A couple pieces of rod or wire probably would have done the trick, I'm happy to have learned something new for next time.
