Europa Clipper didn’t fly near Comet 3I/ATLAS — but could it have passed through its ion tail?
Using NASA Eyes on the Solar System, mission geometry, and recent scientific modeling, we explore whether Europa Clipper may have intersected the extended ion tail plasma of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS in late October–early November 2025.
Ion tails aren’t dust or debris — they’re vast, invisible streams of charged particles shaped by the solar wind. Even from hundreds of millions of kilometers away, a spacecraft can potentially pass through this plasma environment and detect it with onboard instruments.
