Justice Madan Lokur On NCERT Judiciary Corruption Chapter: 'Where Was The Need For That?'

In an interview, Justice Lokur questioned the need for such content, stating, 'There was really no occasion for NCERT to bring in a chapter on corruption in the judiciary in the Class VIII textbook.' He asked whether NCERT was suggesting that the President of India appoints corrupt judges. Justice Lokur welcomed the Chief Justice of India's cognizance of the matter and described it as 'clearly targeting the judiciary.' He also raised concerns about what he described as executive interference in judicial appointments over recent years, suggesting attempts to undermine judicial independence. Justice Lokur emphasised that while accountability exists through in-house procedures and impeachment, the message being sent to impressionable Class 8 students was problematic.
