Twenty years ago, Anthony J. Arillotta found himself standing by a freshly dug grave in a wooded lot, a grim testament to his involvement in a mob coup orchestrated by Adolfo ‘Big Al’ Bruno in the fall of 2003. The grave, originally intended for any number of mob associates, was a stark reminder of the violent underworld he inhabited.
However, in a dramatic turn, Arillotta betrayed his allegiance to the mob, choosing to testify in two murder trials in 2011 and 2012. Following his cooperation, he spent eight years in witness protection within the confines of prison before opting out of the program and returning to his hometown in 2017. Now back in civilian life, Arillotta has joined other former mob figures in leveraging their notoriety.
Reflecting on his decision to cooperate, Arillotta candidly explains, “That was my squeal point. My squeal point was life.” He faced the stark choice of betraying his oath or facing the death penalty after being caught cheating on his ex-wife.
Having committed serious crimes including murder, assault, and robbery, Arillotta questions his future prospects: “I’ve murdered. I’ve beaten. I’ve robbed. What else is there realistically for me to do, professionally, in this area?”
The power play involving Fotios ‘Freddy’ Geas and Emilio Fusco, Arillotta's former allies, culminated in their subsequent prosecution for murder and racketeering. They were convicted for the killings of both Bruno and Arillotta’s brother-in-law, Gary D. Westerman, whose fate was sealed in the grave they had once dug together.
