Hyderabad Boosts Green Transport with 60 New Electric Metro Express Buses, EV Station
Hyderabad is taking a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility as the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) introduces 60 new electric metro express buses. These buses will operate from the Kukatpally depot, where a newly constructed electric charging station has also been inaugurated. This initiative marks a major milestone in the city’s journey toward eco-friendly and cost-efficient public transportation.
According to depot officials, nearly 60 old diesel buses have reached the end of their operational life and are being phased out. Some usable buses are being transferred to rural districts, while completely outdated ones are sent for scrapping. Replacing these with electric buses not only modernizes the fleet but also significantly reduces environmental impact.
TSRTC is also working on an ambitious plan to retrofit 240 existing buses into electric vehicles. This involves removing diesel engines and installing electric motors, making the transition both economical and environmentally responsible. To reduce the financial burden, TSRTC has partnered with private investment firms. These firms will convert and supply the buses, and the corporation will repay the cost in installments with interest. After the agreement period, ownership of the buses will be transferred fully to TSRTC.
Currently, Hyderabad operates around 3,200 buses, of which nearly 440 are electric. The government aims to replace approximately 1,000 aging diesel buses with electric alternatives in the near future. This transition is expected to significantly improve air quality in the city.
Electric buses offer multiple advantages over traditional diesel buses. Each electric bus can reduce carbon emissions by nearly 46 tons annually and cut nitrogen oxide emissions by around 23 kilograms. Overall, this results in nearly a 70% reduction in harmful emissions. Additionally, electric buses are quieter, smoother, and more comfortable for passengers.
From a financial perspective, electric buses help reduce operational costs. Diesel buses typically consume fuel worth ₹10–14 lakh per year, whereas electric buses can cut these expenses by up to 50–70%. This makes them a sustainable solution both environmentally and economically.
With these developments, Hyderabad is rapidly transforming into a green mobility hub. The expansion of electric buses not only ensures cleaner air but also enhances commuter experience. TSRTC’s initiative sets a strong example for other Indian cities aiming to adopt sustainable transportation solutions.
