We tried 2 different owls as a woodpecker deterrent - the Ugold Solar Powered Garden Owl with Detection, Flashing Eyes, Rotating Head, Realistic Hoots, etc. and the Dalen Fake Owl Scarecrow Decoy that does not have a motion detector. The Ugold owl with the motion sensor and hoots was the clear winner. I'm not sure how well it works for other animals but, as I explain in this video, it worked for us to prevent the woodpecker from pecking holes in our house.
