DESCRIPTION
Two cargo ships have sunk near the Strait of Hormuz: the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride (all 21 crew rescued) and the bulk carrier Cape Dao, hit on Sept. 23 with one sailor killed. Iran says it is stepping up attacks in response to the U.S. blockade of its ports; two senior Iranian officials told Reuters the aim is to keep oil prices high and influence the U.S. midterms. The U.S. commander in the region, Adm. Brad Cooper, said in August that Iran has exported zero oil since the blockade resumed in mid-July. Singapore called the attacks "unprovoked, unjustifiable, and a breach of international law."
