Cardinal George Pell leaves behind an “incredible legacy” as a “man of the people” and someone who stood up for his faith and its orthodoxies, Sky News host James Morrow says.
Australia’s most senior Catholic died aged 81 in Rome on Tuesday (local time) after suffering an unexpected heart attack.
Mr Morrow said Cardinal Pell's death leaves a “great hole” in the intellectual and spiritual life of Australia.
“While thankfully most of us will never see the inside of a jail cell, much less be locked up in one for more than 400 days on horrible charges of which we are innocent, we can also follow his example,” he said.
“And choose how we react to the circumstances in which we find ourselves.”
He added Cardinal Pell taught people to "stand up" for what they believed in and not to "back down in the face of bullies".
"In the darkest pits of life, he never gave in to despair," he added.
"I think that’s a light we can all use in these difficult times."
