Why Haven’t Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Entered The Iran–US–Israel War Yet?

Описание: Even as Iran’s regional allies in Lebanon and Iraq have entered the escalating conflict triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Tehran, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have not yet formally joined the war.

The Houthis are a powerful military, political and religious movement based in northern Yemen and led by the Houthi family. They follow the Zaydi branch of Shi’ite Islam and rose to prominence after capturing the Yemeni capital Sanaa in 2014 during a period of political instability.

The following year, Saudi Arabia led a coalition of Arab states in a military intervention aimed at removing the group from power. Years of fighting resulted in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises before a UN-brokered truce in 2022 helped stabilise the conflict.

The Houthis have demonstrated significant missile and drone capabilities in the past, targeting infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and attacking international shipping in the Red Sea after the Gaza war began in 2023.

Although Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi has warned that the group is ready to act at any moment, analysts say the movement may be waiting for a strategic opportunity, coordinating with Iran, or choosing to avoid a wider war due to domestic pressures and the threat of heavy retaliation.
