What Happens When Architecture Steps Back and Lets Nature Lead? | Mountain Shelters

Mountain Shelters by Filipe Pina is a series of compact, timber-built structures located in the mountainous landscape near Belmonte, Portugal. Inspired by traditional shepherd shelters, the project reinterprets vernacular forms through a contemporary architectural lens, emphasizing simplicity, durability, and a close relationship with the terrain. Carefully positioned to follow the site’s topography and frame expansive views, each shelter features an efficient internal layout and large glazed openings that connect interior spaces with the surrounding landscape. Designed with minimal environmental impact in mind, the shelters demonstrate a restrained approach to architecture, where material choice, placement, and scale work together to create a quiet and respectful presence within nature.
