The Micro Four Thirds Depth of Field Advantage…

Описание: Is Micro Four Thirds really incapable of matching full-frame depth of field? Or are we asking the wrong question?

In today’s video, I head down to Mappleton Beach to put the “50mm f/1.8 full-frame look” debate to the test. Using my OM System Micro Four Thirds camera, I compare shooting wide open at f/1.2 with my preferred aperture of f/5.6 for long exposure coastal photography.

Spoiler: I don’t want the full-frame look.

For landscape and long exposure photography, depth of field matters far more to me than blurry backgrounds. Shooting at f/5.6 on Micro Four Thirds allows me to:

• Keep foreground rocks and distant clouds sharp
• Maintain strong depth of field without diffraction issues
• Balance exposure efficiently with ND filters
• Create clean, detailed coastal compositions

I also demonstrate:
60-second long exposures at ISO 200
Using a 6-stop ND filter and polarizer
Live ND adjustments (ND32 to ND64)
Shooting wide open at f/1.2 (and why it doesn’t work for this style)
Live Comp mode for a 5-minute exposure

The truth is simple: sensor size is a tool, not a limitation. If you love shallow depth of field and creamy bokeh, full frame and fast primes like a 50mm f/1.8 are fantastic. But if you want maximum depth of field for landscapes, Micro Four Thirds has real advantages.

I chose Micro Four Thirds because of the depth of field — not in spite of it.
