Organised by Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, “From Hanfu to Cheongsam: Foreign influences in traditional Chinese dresses” is part of a series of public talks by industry experts, held in conjunction with our “Modern Women of the Republic: Fashion and Change in China and Singapore” special exhibition.
While there might be a perceived dichotomy between the “authentic” Chinese hanfu and the cheongsam with “foreign” roots as an evolved Manchurian long robe (qipao or changpao), their historical evolutions have much in common. In this video, speaker Ms Gong Pan Pan, founder of Hanfugirls Collective, artist and independent researcher shares about the history of women’s clothing in China and the diverse foreign influences on its evolution throughout history.
