What is the difference between allogeneic and autologous cells?
What type are Kintaro Cells?
Find out from this video!
All adult cells are either allogeneic or autologous.
Autologous: “auto” means “self”. An autologous transplant uses a person’s own stem cells. In this procedure, stem cells are collected from the patient and frozen in liquid nitrogen before transplant conditioning. Stem cells are intrinsically normal, and they are collected to allow blood cell recovery after the administration of high dose therapy that would otherwise irreversibly damage them. Following conditioning treatment, the patient’s stem cells are returned to the body to help it produce healthy red and white blood cells and platelets.
Allogeneic: “allo” means “other.” An allogeneic transplant uses stem cells from a donor whose human leukocyte antigens (HLA) are acceptable matches to the patient’s. The stem cell donor may be related to the patient, or they may be an unrelated volunteer found through a donor registry.
